Our local operatic society were holding auditions for tap dancers for their show "42nd Street". I already had friends in the society and being an amateur tap dancer I wanted to audition. One problem - I had to sing a solo! I had never sung a solo in my life!!!! I was always the girl in the orchestra pit playing the French Horn!!
So I plucked up courage and put my name forward. I decided to sing "Tell me on a Sunday" which seemed to suit my alto range voice. I practised and practised, because for the first time in a long while, I really wanted this to happen. I wanted to be in the show. I wanted to TAP!!!!!
The audition day came and although nervous, I gave myself a good talking to and told myself, this was my only shot! There were a lot of auditionees!
The dancing audition was first and I just went for it. Smiling away like a Cheshire cat. Then I had to wait for the solo. I remember wanting to bolt out the door, I was so nervous. But I did it. I held it together and then I had to wait for the phone call.............
I got in! I was so relieved that I cried. I was so grateful. You see it was a little dream that I had had since I was a little girl to be able to tap dance on stage and it was going to at last come true at the magic age of 41!
And here we are. The final pose. It was terrific!
So the moral of this little story is - never give up on your dreams! You never know, one day they may come true. xx
